The Seduction of a Winter Solstice

SEASONS OF LIFE

Where I live in the deep south coast of the Great Southern Gondwanaland (aka Aussie – Maate!), winter is slowly swallowing its own shadows, creamy light is barely there and hangs low across the horizon of late afternoon and very early twilights.

Unexpected shafts of sunlight burst through the low slung clouds and drape a chiffonesque film across the dewy, rain-draped bushland and forest understory. Some landscapes look almost fairy-tale.

It is a stilling time. Slate clouds offset striking long, white Karri Trunks. Steely oceans drink creamy, gritty and cold sands. Smoking chimneys send smoke signals to other homes across valleys and hills. Homes become havens of doonas and blankets and movies and family.

It is a stepping and steeping in time. It is a time for warm full bellies, comfort and softness.

For me it’s a time to really bring it home to my heart what is peripheral, what is real, and how do I want to experience this life and how do I want to expand out gratefully and gracefully into the world around me after this retreat.

It is a stilling part of the year for many of us. The soft warmth of a comfortable place to be – to compost – to appreciate the true kernel of who we really are – the essence – and then to consider germination again, unfurling again, blooming again, shedding another skin again, against all odds again.

The seed deep in the moist dark soil, considering the potential and quietly and inwardly preparing for the inevitability of a Spring day some time again.

I love that winter naturally encourages us to do this; that winter whispers us in. And that the Solstice, like a lullaby, hums a seductive tune to hold us there for a short while, sounding us through the season.

This season where the darkness creeps in at the edges of day is really a dance; a slow tango with ‘time’, itself, seducing a ‘seed’ in contemplation.

I have developed a deep appreciation for the winter Solstice. For me it has a real hint of cosmic mystery and a natural softness of night.

In fact I believe there is much to be learned from the seasons of the year, as there is much learned in the different seasons of life. Taking the time to retreat, reflect and recharge no matter where you are in life, on the planet – always makes space for the new light to ease in and shine.

With Love
