Hold on Tightly, Let go Lightly
I am intrigued by this little quote, especially in the personal and self-development tsunami of quotes that shout out ‘Let Go’.
Through that lens it seems contradictory, but I like it. Actually I love it.
I love it because we do at times in life have to hang on and hold on tightly even if we want to let go.
Some things are so worth holding and hanging on to.
Holding and hanging on to hope.
Holding and hanging on to love.
Holding on tightly is about determination and persistence.
It’s about holding that vision and hanging on to the aspiration.
It’s about hanging on to what you believe is your right, your values, your ideas, your personal aspirations.
It’s also about hanging on when the going gets tough. Hanging on with all your might to see the storm through; to push through. Hanging on tightly; to use pure courage and conviction, will and determination.
It has a staunch, committed strength to it.
Hang on. Hang in there. Hold tight for the ride of your life.
There are times when this is absolutely necessary. You can’t let it go. You can’t stop steering; the car has to stay on the road. The fairground of your life requires you to hang on for the ride to face the tests and challenges and to reap the lessons and the breakthroughs. Sometimes it is not right to simply let go.
Which brings me to ‘let go lightly’.
There is a truth in there.
A gentle releasing;
a softening of the white-knuckled grip.
A realisation may arrive that signals that something has to change and the hanging on has to lighten up a little.
A complete let go could be disastrous. A deep tumble into an abyss of the unknown, unprepared and dizzy with confusions is not the way for all of us. Sometimes there is too much at stake. The release requires a gentle and measured unfurling.
Letting go lightly feels mindful and informed by a deeper wisdom or inner knowing.
To let go lightly allows a gentle exploring, as that which we are letting go of is released and whatever may be coming next is allowed some space to gently ease in to.
It’s a great quote. One of the best in my opinion. It is fierce and strong and gently wise.
It opens up the opportunity for me to ponder where am I holding tightly and why. And where can I let go lightly and how.
And I invite you to ponder the same.
Always with love
